Tijani-Bello Ghaffar , a final-year student of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the University of Lagos, has been announced as the new President of the National Association of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Students ( NAMMES ), Nigeria . Ghaffar, who is also the founder of MideCali — a travel and creative brand — and MideCali Engineer , an educational YouTube channel dedicated to simplifying engineering concepts, brings a blend of technical knowledge, leadership, and entrepreneurship to his new role. The Why in Internship: From Ojuelegba to Naval Dockyard

Internships are often seen as a bridge between school and the professional world. But for me, they have become something deeper: a journey of perspective. From watching roadside mechanics in Ojuelegba, to technical college frustrations, to interning today at Naval Dockyard Limited, my path has been full of lessons that go beyond classrooms and machines. Roots in Ojuelegba Growing up in Ojuelegba, I was fascinated by the mechanics on Clegg Street. It wasn’t just the joy of seeing faulty vehicles fixed but the unity of the community - people of different tribes working together, equipping young adults with skills, and reducing the number of idle youths. That curiosity stayed with me. At home, I would dismantle toys and appliances (often leaving traces behind and getting caught 😅). My parents noticed and decided to invest in me by sending me to a technical college instead of a conventional secondary school.
